good morning. fires burning up and down california have thousands of firefighters trying to contain the flames. we'll take you live to the fire lines of the biggest fire the one burning near yosemite. we will bring you the latest information. and it's a huge rim fire as continues to burn out of control this morning. up near yosemite. there are sad news for people who attend a popular berkeley camp that is situated in that area. we'll tell you about the damage done to that facility. final preparations are under way for this week's closure of the bay bridge. what you need to know about the bridge shut down. we are live in fremont where con artists are burglarizing homes. we'll tell you how they are using a story about snakes to trick homeowners. gone. i want to take you out to the

golden gate bridge. a little fog out in. and that bridge could be a little more crowded when the bay bridge closes. we'll tell you how to avoid the traffic trouble spots as we approach that closure. good morning, i'm pam cook it's monday, august 26th. >> and i'm dave clark. how should people dress today? >> it's a little warm. there is a little drizzle on the golden gate and parts of oakland and sfo. but temperatures are in the 60s. a little system just moving in right there. helping to enhance that low cloud deck. very mild. 65. 60s if more. very few upper 50s. san jose at 64. san francisco starting off at 60. really stuck on the temperature. anywhere from 66 to 69. about the last week we will go 68 today. near average for this time of year. back to school continues for some today. alameda unified school district is back to school. starting off 62.

we'll go 65. high today of 70 degrees. a lot of tropical clouds and heavy rain in southern california. so far it's staying out of the rim fire. might make it late tuesday and wednesday. a little cooler today. not much of a breeze. there is a little bit of a delta breeze. here is sal. traffic is moving along okay if you are driving in many areas. although it is getting more crowded for this monday morning. the bay bridge. the metering lights have come on. and that means a crowd at the toll plaza. and no problems on the span. also looking another live picture. this is 880 in oakland. you can see traffic heading south which is on the left getting a little busier. i want to tack about the south bay now and the traffic on 101, 280 and 85 still looking pretty good in the south bay. as we come up to the east bay, the traffic here on 80 we just mentioned it looks good. 580 in oakland and highway 13

also moving well. also just checked in with bart. bart is reporting no delays along with cal train and muni. 6:02 let's go back to the desk. 6:02. more coverage now of all those wild fires burning around california right now. more than 83 newark firefighters are out there battling 400 square miles of fire. over the weekend six wild fires were burning. firefighters managed to contain at least two of them but the biggest the rim fire it is still burning near yosemite national park. the latest report says the rim fire is almost 144,000 acres. it's only 7% contained. almost 3500 firefighters are out there. 23 buildings have been lost. it's still not clear how many of those buildings are homes. yet another casualty of the fire is the berkeley tuolumne family camp owned by the city of berkeley. alex savidge is in berkeley to tell us more about that camp

which is now gone. good morning, alex. >> reporter: yeah sad day for thousands of bay area families who have returned here year after year to the berkeley tuolumne camp. the facility run by the city of berkeley. we will put up a map to show you exactly where this is located. it's right along the tuolumne river near grove land and not far from yosemite national park. berkeley operated this camp since 1922. as the massive rim fire closed in, the popular camp had to be evacuated. counselors in training packed up and hoped for the best. the u.s. forest service is unsure exactly how many buildings at the camp were lost. meantime close to 3500 firefighters are battling the flames on the ground and from the air trying to slow the spread of the huge fire which is now burning inside of yosemite national park. this is new aerial video taken on board a california air national guard air tanker.

a plane that can drop 3,000 gallons of water in five seconds. with thick smoke blanketing the area, firefighters are warning people with breathing problems and heart problems to stay away and be careful. one woman suffered a heart attack as she evacuated a few days ago because of the smoke and the stress. >> they are warning older people. people with breathing problems or heart problems they shouldn't be breathing this air. i think that's what happened. she breathed the air which caused the heart attack. >> the rim fire is still threatening thousands of homes and structures right now. over the weekend there were some people in the community of grove land who were allowed to return back to their homes. in the mean tame we should tell you there are several other bay area camps in that same vicinity threatened by the flames. that includes uc berkeley layer of the bear camp.

this morning i reached out to members of the tuolumne camp and i'm waiting to hear back from them. >> for more on the rim fire let's take you live to reporter dominic. he's live in tuolumne city right now where evacuations are adviced. dominic. >> reporter: they certainly are advised. yesterday there was a significant run by the fire. and we thought briefly for a second that the evacuation order was going to change. not from advisory but to warning. and warnings are only issued if a mandatory order is eminent and it really did get that close. right now we still have smoke hanging over the city. because of the shifting the very unpredictable winds coming up to 40 miles an hour across the top of the sierra ridges. that could very easily push the flames into the city. we are seeing crowning runnings across the entire front of the

fire. crowning is when entire trees suddenly burst into flame. the flames at the top rush across the top of the forest and down the other tree. and along the forest floor. and it just completely consumes the landscape. at the moment we have parks within yosemite about 15,000 acres of yosemite have been burned. a lot of campgrounds around there. 13 have been closed. we've had at least 25 campers evacuated from one camp because smoke was so was too dangerous 0 hang around. we also know that berkeley which there is a campground there that food for 90 years -- that stood for 90 years that burned to the ground. we also heard from park official there is is real pressure on them to protect yosemite park. the dam area has been effected. that secting the power lines. but an even greater national

treasure is the central valley in yosemite and public fairs officials say they don't plan to close it but they are seeing smoke drift in. back to you. >> thank you. you can find more photos of the big fire on our channel 2 website ktvu.com. just go to a look for the slide show under the top story tab on the home page. new this morning police in san francisco are looking for the suspect in an overnight stabbing that sent one person to the hospital. it happened on mission near ruth street at 1:30 this morning. the victim was taken to the hospital and is in serious condition. right now it's unclear what led up to that stabbing. two young girls are among the four people shot in a daytime shooting in east oakland. that happened on 104th avenue. the two little girls ages eight and 12 were wounded. no one was seriously hurt but

the latest shoot involving children is fueling fears that no one is safe from gun violence in oakland. community leaders are hopeful the city will find a way to end this cycle of violence. >> there could have been lots of problems that seemed insurmountable. jim crow seemed insurmountable. and it wasn't. it took courage. its took people who were willing to put themselves in harms way in order to do the work that needs to be done. >> there is still no word on what led up to the gunfire and police are still looking suspects. the two children in yesterday's shooting are still looking to survive. on august 7th one-year-old drew jackson was killed after someone shot through the walls of the house where he was sleeping. his father was also killed. and three other young children

were shot and killed in 2011. a warning from fremont police that thieves are posing as animal control officers. similar scams like this happened last week in another city. >> yes, in union city there was a similar case. and now police in fremont think two incidents here could be related to that. and the homeowner didn't even realize that she had been burglarized until a day later. on saturday around 5:00 p.m. a woman who disguised herself came to a home on moore drive. telling the resident a poisonous snake was on the loose and bitten a little girl on the street. everyone needed to leave the house and go in the yard so measurements could be taken inside. that is when a second male

suspect entered the home and stole cash and jewelry. earlier that day another home was hit in the hill view month see toe area of niles and that incident there were two telling the homeowner that poisonous snakes were on the loose. police tribed one of the suspects as a white or latino female. five feet tall. she was wearing a hat, dark gloves a tan button down short sleeve shirt with patches on the sleeve. investigators think she may be traveling in a gray or silver land rover. here is what people should look for. this is the official city of fremont logo that is on every picture id of an employee and it's also clearly marked on the cars they drive. if you suspect anyone is trying to scam you, you should make sure to look for that id. fremont police are also asking anybody if surveillance video

of the incidents or sis effect ifs that would surely help them and give them a call. reporting live federal fremont janine de la vega. today is the final monday morning commute for you drivers on the old bay bridge. abort will run trains overnight at 14 stations including sfo. the oakland coliseum station and walnut creek. we are also looking at special events over the weekend. like the cal bears. we'll have longer trains and be able to carry people to those events. >> you can also hop on a ferry to get across the bay. san francisco bay ferry will have extra boats during the bridge closure. golden gate also adding services. we've got a special section on

happening today president obama will recognize a soldier from the bay area. ty carter will receive the medal of honor. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom carter is credited with risking his life to save a fellow soldier. >> reporter: carter jumped boo action when taliban attacked.

the army says carter killed enemy troops, resupplied ammunition to american fighters, provided first aid, and risked his own life to save an injured fighter. he has mixed emotions about receiving the medal of honor. it is great honor but getting the award means he was in a situation where fellow brothers were suffering and dying around him. he did everything he could to preconvenient further loss. >> i a grateful for all those i fought with that day. >> reporter: by receiving the medal of honor he becomes nondeployable but he does have plans to continue helping fellow soldiers. i'm working on that story for you at 7:15. live in washington kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. basketball star lamar odom of the los angeles clippers is being reported as missing this morning. tmz reports no one has seen

lamar for the past three days. his family and friends in southern california say they fear the worst. among other things he's the husband of reality tv star khloe kardashian. reportedly he's been dealing with a serious drug problem. police need your help. they are searching for an at risk missing man. 81-year-old aldolfo was last seen sunday morning on brookshire drive. 5'4" weighing about 150 pounds. he was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt and blue jeans. if you have any information call saundra antero police. we want to show you some of the bike rats located in san francisco. many more can be found in redwood city, palo alto, mountain view, and san jose. the program launches this

we'll just leave it there. >> i'm glad my kids were not watching. >> go to twitter. let's look at what we have now. the traffic is moving along okay. it is backed up at the toll plaza as it normally would be for a monday. you are dealing with a little bit of drizzle. steve and i have been talking about it. just to remind you, just a little slippery out there on some of the roads. you might want to add the extra five to ten minutes. let's go to the map. i want to talk about the commute in oakland. it looks pretty good here as you drive on 880. it looks pretty good. and 13 and 24 off to a good start. highway 4 a lot of fender benders. i think the most serious one is westbound highway 4. it is impacting most of the traffic from antioch to pittsburg.

let's take a live look at interstate 80 that looks good. let's go to steve. very good morning. oakland back to school here. we have a couple school districts going back to school today. very mild. 62. we will go 68 and a high of 72 downtown oakland. the low cloud deck is in place and so is the drizzle. joe gray said walking the dog. some drizzle. i know we had some san francisco. san francisco looking for a high of 68. not much has changed there. very mild lows. mainly 60s. a few upper 50s. but there is a 59 about 65 range. plenty of low clouds being helped along by a weak little system. a lot of that tropical cloud deck making far lot of rain down near las vegas and the desert of southern california. will any of this make it? there is a lot of moisture streaming up across new mexico.

we'll see maybe tuesday night into wednesday. you can see all of that moisture. kind of muggy. warm for that low to be in the 60s. highs today will cool down a little bit and maybe a few high clouds muggy, humid. possibility of showers in the central sierra and southern sierra. our weather being influenced by that tenuous rope. that comes through that is increasing the low cloud deck. a little cooler and clouds and sun. morning drizzle gives way to 60s and 70s and 80s. down a few degrees from yesterday. temperatures starting off very mild. ending up near average for this time of year. a little warmer on tuesday. maybe into wednesday. and then it levels off. it does look cooler as we head toward the weekend. especially on sunday. it is back to school day for thousands more students here in the bay area. coming up at 6:30 what oakland

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. i started saying niners. san francisco 49ers fans getting pumped up for the regular nfl season. fans got so excited extra security had to be called in last night. >> oh yeah. well you get the wave going on and then you have a couple fans coming out. >> three rowdy fans tried to run on to the field during the fourth quarter in the game against the minnesota vikings. only one fan was successful but that forced the 49ers security team to bring in bike cops that were outside the stadium to help with the efforts inside. the 49ers meanwhile had no problem with the vikings beating them 34-14. incredible video of controversy at the go pro grand prix on sunday. take a look. scott dixon who led a good chunk of the race clipped another team's crew member as he was pulling out of the pit row. the man went flying.

luckily only had a twisted ankle. dixon the driver said he did it on purpose. he was hit with a penalty. sending him from second to 15th place. will power ended uptaking the checker flag. time now 6:26. there is a shift among drivers in carolina. there are more older drivers and fourteen age drivers. that could mean the roads are less safe. drivers over the age of 85 caused the most accidents. they are now 75% more older drivers on the road than there were ten years ago. this morning more people are being warned to evacuate from a wild fire near yosemite national park. this one has burned almost 144,000 acres. it's only 7% contained. and the countdown to the closure what you will need to know before the bay bridge closes wednesday night. just had someone send me a tweet from a hewn ye bus saying

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. a little quiet. there it is the opening bell live in new york this morning. pretty good numbers over night for the european markets and the asian markets. our futures have been indicating a little bit of a lower opening but they just turned around a bit. even though u.s. durable goods orders came in. largest drop in nearly a year. despite that it looks like the numbers are heading up.

cover down in southern california. we'll stay there for awhile. a little cooler. clouds and sun after that morning drizzle. morning drizzle. 60s and 70s and 80s. my good friend sal. steve, good morning. traffic is doing pretty well if you are driving around the bay area. there is not a lot going on expect for the drizzle and a little bit of slow traffic here and there. we don't have a lot of crashes. a couple fender benders. the last monday for the old bridge of the oldies span. right now traffic is pretty typical temperature 10-15 delay at the toll plazaen. interstate # 80 the traffic here does look nice if you are driving farther south. south bay right now northbound 101 traffic does look pretty good as you drive through at 280 and 85. as a matter of fact we are not all that bad here as i look at the south bay. it is not a bad drive at all. and then we are going into east bay and the traffic here on 580

and 880 looks good. let's go back to the desk. thank you, sal. continuing coverage of the fire fight happening around the state. right now more than 8300 firefighters are battling nearly 400 square miles of fire. six wild fires were burning over the weekend. as of last count, firefighters managed to contain two of them. the rim fire which is burning near yosemite national park is by far the largest. as of this morning update, the rim fire has burned 144,000 acres. it's only 7% contained. almost 3500 fire personnel are on the scene. 23 buildings have been lost. it's not clear how many of those are actual homes. another casualty of the fire though a camp owned by the city of berkeley a lot of people very familiar with that area. coming up at 6:45 we will have a live report on that. that is also in the line of

fire. acuta look at the countdown clock. we are in the last couple of days of the closure of the bay bridge. cal tran almost shut down the bay bridge wednesday night. they will make way for the new eastern span next week. tara moriarty is joining us live from the toll plaza with more on the preparations getting ready for that new opening. good morning. >> reporter: there were supposed to be a public celebration but it was canceled. there was supposed to be a bridge walk and fire works but those were canceled when repairs to the broken bolts on the bridge through the timeline off. but still after 11 years of construction and $6.4 billion worth of taxpayer money, most people are just excited and relieved the new bridge will open. wednesday night at 8:00 crews are shutting down the bridge. they are going to be paving and installing barrier rails. commuters they are bracing for a traffic nightmare.

>> there is five lanes that will merge into one five lane thing. it sounds like chaos. >> i will probably not leave the city because i don't like traffic. i know a lot of my friends will work from home. >> reporter: because of all of the congestion, ferries are extending service. bart is adding limited overnight service through sunday night. a number of big events are scheduled over the holiday weekend including a bunch of a's games and arts festival. the chhp will roll traffic breaks. the bridge will remain closed until 5:00 tuesday morning. and coming up, we will let you know when the bikes and pedestrian paths will open. live from the bay bridge toll plaza i'm tara moriarty. lieutenant governor gavin newsom will be there. he will be standing in for governor brown will be at a family party in michigan next week. so newsom will be the acting if

governor. governor brown made travel plans earlier when it looked like the bridge would not open on time. we have a special section on our ktvu channel 2 website for you. you can find it under hot topics at ktvu.com. police are on the lookout for two suspects after a restaurant was robbed at gunpoint. that happened at 11:00 p.m. on sad night at the corners tavern in walnut creek. witnesses say two armed men burst into the back office with their faces hidden by hoodies and bandannas. police say the remaining customers in the dining room were unaware of what was going on in the back. one of the waitresses held at gunpoint describes the ordeal. >> something you see on tv you don't think it's going to happen to you. and it's really frightening. and i don't want that to happen to anyone else. >> walnut creek police showed

us surveillance video from the plaza garage of this suv leaving suspect vehicle and another possible -- possibly the same vehicle from a different angle. the vehicle they are interested in is a light colored suv with a roof rack. no one was hurt. we do have more details on that downtown walnut creek burglary on august 15th. thieves rammed a pickup truck into the tiffanies. police say the suspects took jewelry from a police case. so far no arrests have been made. united airlines worker accused of stealing luggage from passengers at sfo is due in court. shawn is scheduled to be formerly charged with grand theft and burglary. his wife is also facing similar charges. prosecutors say the couple stole luggage from passengers who were supposed to fly into

sfo on july 8th but they were diversed from that plane crash. the victims luggage arrived at sfo before they did. plans by the warriors to build a new waterfront arena in san francisco is behind schedule. the san francisco chronicle is reportings new documents show the team may miss the opening date by several months. these documents also indicate the repair costs for the peers out there to hold the venue. it's gone up by as much as $50 million. representatives for the team says the arena will be ready for the beginning of the 2017 season. today is the first day of school for the oakland school district. the oakland police department has tips for both kids and parents. ktvu brian flores is live at oakland police. department headquarters with the advice being offered. brian. >> reporter: you and dave know

what this goes through. oakland police sent out tips for kids and parents that were heading back to school today. they say safety should always be a top concern. through their community e-mail service opd sent out a tips for kids to be safe. it's important to map out a safe route for their kids. they also say to identify safe houses in the neighborhood so your kids know where to go in case of an emergency away from home. when it comes to bus safety opd says it's important to teach your kids to arrive five minutes early. making sure the bus driver sees them before crossing in front and never walking behind the bus and be aware of bullying on the bus as well. after school police say that your kids should check in with an adult as soon as they get home. establish rules about who can come over. as well as restrict internet

usage. and find a trusted neighbor that will allow your kids to come over in case of emergency. kids these days are faced with more challenges than ever before through peer pressure, bullying, and school violence. overall police say if you see something say something. that is not just advice for kids but parents and teachers alike. live until oakland brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. today assembly member nancy skinner and dana will call for equal access to federal meal programs in the oakland unified school district. they want congress to incorporate the regional cost of living to determine a families eligibility. research has shown that children who go hungry are more likely to struggle in the classroom and have increased tardiness. we have a special section on our website for back to schoolish foe.

and we have posted pictures. just saw who was just up there we were smiling at. torrey is up there now. time now 6:40. something new for san francisco police officers. this follows a federal investigation that found discrepancies with police reports. a fire near yosemite national park continues to burn the bay area camp that was destroyed by the flames. and right now it's doing pretty well although we do have slow downs out there. especially approaching the bridge on westbound 80. a lot of reports of drizzle coming in. a weak front coming by. that will help cool down temperatures but what about the rest of the week?

right on through the berkeley tuolumne family camp owned by the city of berkeley. alex savidge is in berkeley right now. you say another local camp may be in danger. alex. >> reporter: yeah. there are several other camps run by bay area cities that are in the line of fire this morning. this morning though devastating news for the organizers and campers that go to berkeley tuolumne family camp up there in the sierras. they have gone there for many, many years. and this family camp run by the city of berkeley. we will put up a map to show you exactly the area we are talking about. the camp is situated along the river. berkeley operated this camp since 1922. as the massive rim fire closed in last week the popular camp did have to be evacuated. counselors who were on sight during training had to pack up and leave and obviously hope

convicted in the deadly fort hood rampage that killed 13 people will appear in a court today for sentencing hearing. major nidal hasan has faced a possible death sentence. at the least he will spend the rest of his life in prison. hasan showed no reaction after being found guilty last week. time is 6:47. new this morning one of the cars carrying united nation's weapons experts were attacked by snipers. inspectors were on their way to investigate a reported chemical attack. this was the video of the inspectors leaving their hotel this morning. the united nations says no one was hurt in that sniper attack and inspectors have arrived at the site of the reported chemical weapons attack. they are meeting with doctors and some of the victims. meantime some members of congress want swift military action against the syrian government if chemical weapons use is confirmed.

>> i'm here. good morning everybody. let's take a look at the commute now. the traffic is doing pretty well on the east shore freeway. and no trouble if you are driving. although it is getting a little more crowded. it's not really quiet the light monday here as we were hoping for. a little bit of drizzle out there. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza and show you the traffic is backed up for 15-20 minute delay. i just want to mention the livermore valley we've had slow traffic getting into the main part of livermore. this is quiet a bit of slow traffic on the commute. right through here. so just give yourself plenty of extra time. if you are driving to castro valley there are slow traffic there. transitioning on 238. if you are driving from hayward down south it is slow. a lot of things are getting slow. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir.

welcome back. time now 6:56. a child psychiatrist that pled no contest to molesting boys is due to find out his fate this morning. 81-year-old dr. williams ayres of san mateo made that no contest plea just four days into a jury selection. the first trial ended in a hung jury and a subsequent mistrial in 2009. several of the victims are expected to testify today. ayres could get up to 20 years in prison.

san jose may soon become the biggest city in california to ban plastic foam food containers. the city council is due to vote tomorrow. many rest ants say foam take out boxes are recyclable but supporters say most of the containers end up in landfills. that ban is approved multistate restaurant chains will need to use alternatives by 2014. the smaller neighborhood restaurants by is 2015. >> two teens that spent the summer engaged in very -- two teams that spent the summer engaged in verbal battles will finish for the cup. they won by the largest margin of three minutes and 20 seconds. san jose sharks fans will have the chance to buy tickets to the team's preseason game.
